HAN, CHOONG SEOK

Artist Han talks about 'relationship' with the idea 'glancing'. 'Glancing' represented in his characters is an expression of defensive instinct in a relationship. Keen glance from human characters became a lot warmer after having animal character. Animals‘s eyes that have somewhat unfamilar within warmness have changed as well. It become more soft and warmer facing a girl. The story about relationship with his own expression diversifies your point of view of the world.

His way of working is a little different. He works by backing the Gwangmokcheon(cloth made from Korean cotton)cloth directly onto the panel and not on a regular canvas. Unlike thick canvas cloth coated with gesso, Gwangmokcheon is thin and uncoated. This allows the paint to permeate. After making a deep-colored background by soaking the paint into a self-made frame, the artist starts his work on top of it. The work completed with this unique process gives more depth in the artwork, which results in the uniqueness that is Han Chung-seok.

작가 한충석은 ‘눈흘김’을 통해 ‘관계’에 대해 이야기한다. 작가의 캐릭터에 나타나는 ‘눈흘김’은 관계사이에서오는 방어본능의 표현이다. 인물에서 나타난 날카로운 시선은 동물 캐릭터를 입고 한층 따뜻해 졌다. 따뜻함속에 어딘가 모를 낯섦을 품고 있던 동물의 눈빛은 소녀를 만나 부드럽고 따뜻한 시선을 전한다. 한충석만의 독특한 표현방법으로 전달하는 ‘관계’의 이야기가 세상을 바라보는 시선을 더욱 풍요롭게 한다.

그의 작업 방식은 조금 색다르다. 그는 일반 캔버스가 아니라 판넬에 직접 광목천을 배접하여 작업을 한다. 광목천은 젯소로 코팅이 되어있는 도톰한 캔버스 천과 달리 얇고 코팅처리가 되어있지 않아 물감이 스며드는 특징이 있다. 직접 만든 그림틀에 물감을 스며들게 하여 깊은 색을 우려낸 후 그 위에 그림을 그려낸다. 독특한 과정으로 완성된 작품은 한충석 작품 특유의 느낌으로 작품의 깊이를 만들어낸다.
